It is located near several large military facilities: Naval Air Station Pensacola to the West; Hurlburt Field and Eglin Air Force Base to the East; and Naval Air Station Whiting Field to the North.

Tourism has increased in the Navarre area since 2010, being declared "Florida's Best Kept Secret" by the local hospitality business. The Navarre region is also the proud home to numerous academically celebrated public schools, as well as colleges Northwest Florida State and Pensacola State.

A large portion of the scenes in Jaws 2 were filmed off the coast of Navarre and Navarre Beach in 1977.

History of Navarre at a glance

  • In 1693, Spanish explorers Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora and Admiral Andrés de Pez y Malzárraga set sail from Veracruz to explore Northwest Florida.

  • The expedition discovered the East Bay River, naming it “The River Jordan” in honor of Captain Jordan de Reina.

  • On April 11, 1693, the Spanish encountered a Native American camp, naming the site “El Robledal” due to the abundance of oak trees.

  • In 1827, white settlers, including the Wyman and Williams families, were living along Santa Rosa Sound in what would become Navarre.

  • The Axelson family established a homestead in Robledal around 1856 and set up a successful shipyard on Axelson Point.

  • During the Civil War, the Axelsons’ shipyard prospered by doing business with the Union navy and the United States Merchant Marines.

  • The area was known as “Bilowry” from 1886 to 1891 and later as Hiawatha, a name still used for a neighborhood in Navarre.
